ishling magic began with a simple belief: the little moments — a grandmother's hands, a city you both loved, a joke only two people understand — deserve more than a photo caption. They deserve to become a story.
Every story here is written to order, from the memories you share. No templates, no fill-in-the-blanks, and never written by a machine. Just one person's story, told the way only you remember it, for someone who means the world to you.
Where the name comes from
I went to Northern Ireland not knowing what it would do to me. The landscape, the way people there hold on to the past, and the art — it changed what I thought a story could be.
Then I found the word aisling: an old Irish word for a dream, and for a kind of poem in which a woman appears in a vision and speaks. In those poems she is Ireland itself. Nobody wrote her story for her — she arrived, and told it.
The poets of that tradition believed the world holds thin places, where the everyday and something older touch. That is what I try to make for the people you love: the thin place where a life becomes a story, written down while it can still be read aloud.
And the name? Ish from Ishvarya. Aisling, the dream. ishling — my dream, written for yours.
Why I do this
Almost nobody is ever told, properly, in writing, what they meant to someone. And the people who hold a family together — most often women — are usually the last to have their story told. That is the gap this exists to close.
More than stories
One day, a share of every story will give someone else a story of their own. We are building toward a future where part of what you pay helps women and children who have never been told they matter get to hear it. Watch this space.
